Games of the Year Countdown!!! NUMBER TEN

Starting today, and on until December 31st, I will be listing my Top Ten Games of 2010.  Every day the countdown will give you the next game in the lineup until I unveil my own Game of the Year on December 31st!!!  So lets get started shall we?

At Number 10:
League of Legends by Riot Games

League of Legends is a game anyone with a working PC and internet connection can download and play for free.  In saying this I have to say it is one of the most fun free games I have played in a long time.  I, being the cheap guy I am, have gone around and tried out a lot of freeware games on the internet, most of which I can't even remember the names to anymore.  LoL however is the one freeware game that has stood out for me.

In League of Legends you and your team fight against another team in an RTS-esque fashion.  Each player controls a champion, which before the game you get to select from a HUGE list of unique and varying champions, and the goal of each team is to get into the other teams base and destroy their Nexus, which is basically like a control core for everything you could say.  From the Nexus spawn minions for each team, which are there to help the team with their goal.  Finally, there are three 'lanes' which act as direct routes to each Nexus which the minions travel upon.

Now each Nexus is guarded by a series of Turrets that needs to be destroyed before you can actualyl destroy the Nexus, as until one turret is destroyed, all the ones behind it are invulnerable.  As you fight on in each game your champion levels up, increasing their stats and the power of their abilities.  As turrets and minions are destroyed you also get gold which you can use to purchase items for your champions to further increase their fighting potential.

League of Legends, like many other games you can play for free, have parts you can purchase with real money.  In most games, if you pay for something the game offers, it puts you in a god-like state, where the bonuses from paying for it are so monumental that the people who don't want to pay for it get crushed beneath your feet.  This isn't so with League of Legends.  In League of Legends, one of the things that can only be obtained via purchasing it (via the Riot Point system) are custom champion skins.  While they don't actually do anything for you in game (so no godlike state), they do add a new added bit of fun to the game.  Even though I like to hold on to every penny I get, I myself have put out a couple dollars to purchase some of these skins.  Why?  Well I feel that the developers of this game did such a good job with it they deserve something for their effort.

Hope you enjoy the game, and stay tuned to see what sits at #9 tomorrow!
