Game of the Month: January 2011

So...I am sitting down playing some video games when I turn and look at my calendar only to realize something I had not realized yet about today.  What is that?  Well I kind of just realized that TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF JANUARY!?!?!?!  And you all know what that means right?  Time for my Game of the Month for the first month of 2011 =D

Now for anyone who heard last weeks show where I was talking to Tommy who was in New York (by the way, glad you didn't get snowed in) I at one point was talking about how not much of anything came out gaming wise this month.  There was Mass Effect 2 being released for the Playstation 3, Dead Space 2, and LittleBigPlanet2.  Now I have played Mass Effect on the PC and thoroughly enjoyed it, but it's an old game and I felt like doing something new.  Add on top of that the fact that I really didn't like Dead Space 1, and well I am playing LittleBigPlanet2 all month long.  AND HOLY SHIT WAS IT A FUN MONTH!!!

For anyone who doesn't own a Playstation 3 well...lets say I feel sorry for you.  LittleBigPlanet2 is one of those Playstation exclusive games that makes the system worth getting.  Though I am not here to endorse Sony.  I am here to tell you about LittleBigPlanet2 and the adventures I had with my Sack-Boy =D

Now for those unfamiliar with the previous game, like LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet2 is a multiplayer platformer game.  There are no guns (kind of), there's no killing people (king of), and there is definitely no violence what so ever (again...kind of...).  I think what makes LittleBigPlanet2 so much fun is the fact that it's multiplayer.  Sure you can make a run through story mode and have all the fun the game will give you, but only when you enter multiplayer and add in the element of everyone trying to dick each other over does LittleBigPlanet2 show why it's such a good game.

Sure you can swing across the map with your grappling hook.  But wouldn't it be more fun, to while you're swinging, knock off your friend and have them hurtle face first into a pit of lava?

Sure you can dance when you win a level, or you can slap around your friend's Sack-Person like you own the bitch!

Storywise there isn't much to LittleBigPlanet2.  Some stuff happens in the imaginary world where all the Sack-People are from and you have to go and fix things because as usual you are the worlds only hope.  Now I am not saying that the story mode isn't fun.  It is quite amusing but there are some things I would have liked changed in it.  One thing I did like the see was the inclusion of fully voiced cinematics.  It helped to add some character to all the people you were doing things for.  Unfortunately you only hear their voices during the cinematics.  During gameplay you hear the Charlie Brown 'muah muah muah' while having to read what they are trying to tell you.  Would it have been so bad to add the voices into the game play too?

Now I am not sure if it was just for me, but the costumes I put together for my Sack-Boy in LittleBigPlanet didn't cross over for me to use in LittleBigPlanet2 (thank god I only really made 2 of them!) but all the items and things you have from LittleBigPlanet will still transfer over.  So if you have any costumes you really enjoyed putting together, you just need to put them together again and you're set.

As for the gameplay, much of it is the same as in LittleBigPlanet.  They added a few new things near the middle to end of the game but overall the controls are the same, which is a good thing.  I mean how exactly do you advance on the controls in a platformer?  You can't really, and the controls for LittleBigPlanet were great to begin with anyway.  Why fix it if it isn't broken am I right?

The graphics for LittleBigPlanet2 are a bit better than in LittleBigPlanet, which while it may be a good thing, is expected from a sequel.  Regardless, being able to better see me screw over all my friends brings me fits of joy and laughter :)

In the end LittleBigPlanet2 was an amazing game and I wish I had remembered to preorder it.  No place I have gone to had copies so I had to go out and rent it :(
Regardless it was money spent was as I enjoyed every minute I played the game.

I give LittleBigPlanet2 a 9.5/10 and my 'This Game Will Blow Your Socks Off' Seal of Approval!

LittleBigPlanet2 is available only for the Playstation 3.
