New Release Pick of the Month: April

Do you like dungeon crawling?  Do you like solving challenging puzzles?  Do you like a game littered with secrets for you to find?  Do you think you would enjoy a game that has pissed me off beyond belief to the point where I almost completely flipped over my computer desk?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may enjoy Legend of Grimrock.

Legend of Grimrock takes a step back to the old school style first-person dungeon crawler that existed long before my time with games, and it does it phenomenally.  You can go around with a party of up to four different characters (notice I said up to four, you could just have one character if you wanted) which you create yourself through a very Dungeons & Dragons like character system.  From there you have to escape this gigantic prison complex that is basically a huge labyrinth built into the world's biggest mountain.  For the most part, it is an incredibly satisfying game to play.

The game play is quite simplistic.  Simple W, A, S, D movement with Q and E to turn you around, then you just click on things to use them.  One really cool thing which I like about the game, is that if you were an amputee, and only had one arm, they have an option where you can do everything using nothing but the mouse.  I think that's a nice little added feature that just makes the game easier on people who would normally have a difficult time with this kind of game.

There isn't really much of a story, since none of your characters talk, and the only noises you hear are usually the sound of things attacking you.  This actually brings me to my favorite part about the game, it's atmosphere.  There isn't much background music, so the eerie quite in the dark and lonely halls of the dungeon scare the crap out of you.  I have multiple times checked, and rechecked an area because I thought there was a creature hiding from me, only to realize the noise came from behind a door I had yet to open.

All in all, Legend of Grimrock is an extremely fun, and surprisingly relaxing game that I have spent, and will spend plenty of time playing.  Definitely worth every penny!
